What to Expect at an In-Home Hearing Test

If you or someone you love has been turning up the TV, asking people to repeat themselves or skipping get-togethers because conversations are hard to follow, a hearing test is a good first step. But getting to an appointment is not always easy. That is why Hear4U offers in-home hearing services within about 20 miles of Diamond Bar, by appointment.

Here is what an in-home visit looks like, from the first phone call to the follow-up.

Before the visit

When you call, we will confirm your address and find a time that works for you and any family members who want to be there. Family is always welcome, and having a familiar voice in the room can actually help during parts of the visit.

To get ready, it helps to have:

  • A quiet room where the TV and radio can be turned off
  • Any hearing aids you already own, even old ones
  • A list of your medications
  • A few notes about where hearing is hardest for you, such as restaurants, phone calls or church

Talking about your hearing

Every visit starts with a conversation. Robert Cousins, a licensed Hearing Instrument Specialist (License #HA8055) with more than 10 years of experience, will ask about your health history, any ringing in your ears and the situations where you struggle. This helps him understand what you need, not just what a test shows.

The hearing test

The test itself is comfortable and non-invasive. You will listen to a series of tones and words and let us know when you hear them. We will also look at how well you understand speech, because hearing sounds and understanding words are not the same thing.

When the test is done, we go over the results together in plain language. You will see what kind of hearing loss you have, if any, and what your options are. If hearing aids are not the right step yet, we will tell you.

If hearing aids are right for you

We fit hearing aids from Phonak, Oticon, Signia, Starkey, ReSound, Widex and Unitron, including rechargeable and Bluetooth models. We will help you compare styles and prices, and there is no pressure to decide on the spot.

Hear4U offers a free 7-day trial, so you can wear your hearing aids during meals, phone calls and favorite shows before you commit. Financing is available from $75 per month, and we are happy to help you check your insurance benefits.

Fitting and follow-up at home

At the fitting, Robert programs your hearing aids for your hearing and shows you how to wear, charge and clean them. Because we are in your home, we can fine-tune them for the voices and sounds you hear every day.

Hearing aids work best after a few adjustments, so we come back to fine-tune the settings as you get used to them. We are also available for cleanings and repairs down the road.
